greeting cards (a draft)

Today I put in the mail two cards.
One is a sympathy card
the other a birthday card

I’m extending sympathy to a coworker/neighbor/friend
whose mother just passed away.
I’m celebrating a 29th birthday with a friend
I’ve known for well over 20 of those years.

Both cards have flowers on the front.
Both invoke the presence of God in our lives.
And yet how differently I feel as write in each:
“Praying that you feel God’s presence in a profound way
as you walk through this time.”
“Can you believe you’ve made it?”

How each conjures up personal connections.
Birthdays and deaths
Is that one reason we send cards? To feel that connection?

And I am reminded again, as in so many experiences, of circles.
