“If you’ll keep the dead blooms pinched off,
your daylilies will contine to blossom for weeks and weeks,”
says the gardener.
“It takes some time to walk the garden and deadhead. But it’s worth it.
It is because we tend the plants…that is why the flowers do so well here.”

And so I do walk the garden.
And pinch the blossoms, the sticky pollen lingers on my fingers.
And every time I put forth some words,
some verse
sometimes sticky with personal implication
I find that new words and new verses come forth.

So it is to be a gardener of poetry.

One Response to “daylilies”

  1. And isn’t it because we tend our children here that they do so well? Does it not fill us with a similar but other joy to be gardeners of children?
