Mountain News

They say that word takes longer to get to the mountains. This time it was the opposite.

I just found out yesterday that Mary Jane Queen passed away on June 29. For those of you who don’t know, Queen was a walking museum of Appalachian music and lore. She knew many of the old ballads. I met her when I was a senior at WCU and have been a fan ever since. It’s a reminder that the old ways are passing and we’ve got to try to learn from people like Queen before it’s too late.

I also learned that my old WCU dorm is being torn down. Helder has been on campus since 1966 so she’s due. But it’s a little sad to think the Cullowhee skyline will have changed such that Helder will no longer be a part of it.

But change is good sometimes.
