I Capture the Castle

The word that comes to mind after reading this novel by Dodie Smith is “charming”. Published in the 1940s, I Capture the Castle is enjoying somewhat of a rebirth on book club lists.

The story is told through journal entries of Cassandra, a young British woman who keenly observes those around her. It is a pleasant story about relationships with men: brothers, lovers and fathers. For those who like to write and think about what it is to become a writer, this is a great read. For those who want to remember first love and unrequited love, this is a sweet story. For those who need a break from pop-fiction/chick-lit, this is a breath of fresh air.
